Description :

A combination of banana peels and green tea leaves were formulated as a product, aiming its potential use as a great wound healer. Choosing banana peel as a material is an effort to have responsibility for environment to reduce waste and utilize it into useful product. In fact, banana peel contains of flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and saponins compound that have bioactivity as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound healer.

In addition, green tea leaf contains high polyphenol content, especially EGCG that has bioactivity as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. In previous study, banana peels with a concentration of 10% have a potential effect as a treatment of secondary- grade burns (wound healer). While, green tea leaves with a concentration of 6.4% are also have a potential effect as a treatment of secondary- grade burns (wound healer). So, to maximize the healing effect of burns, in this study we combined 10% banana skin extract with 6,4% green tea leaves extract. In this research, we innovated a wound healing gel from waste product (banana peels) and green tea leaves, so the waste product could be more useful and a low-cost gel product was made.

The active compounds of banana peels and green tea leaves were extracted using maceration method. Phytosomal delivery system was integrated in this gel to facilitate the release of active ingredients from its base effectively, to maintain the stability of the active ingredient, and to increase the solubility of the active ingredient, so the physical appearance of the gel was improved. The phytosomal formulation used phosphatidylcholine and lecithin in 1: 1 ratio and it was prepared by sonication method.

The size of this phytosome tested through Particle Sized Analysis. HPMC and carbopol were formulated as gelling agent. Organoleptic, spreadibility, homogenity, pH, viscosity, adhesion, efficiency of entrapment, and thermodynamic stability test were performed to evaluate the gel. The name of this product is NABA-TEA Gel (Natural phytosome of Banana Peels-Green Tea Leaves Gel) which focuses on the use of phytosome as a gel delivery system for active compounds in banana peel and green tea leaf are expected to potentially anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and accelerate healing of the second degree burns.
